Global warming
has affected our planet for a long time and we would like
to help solve this problem. Global warming is the increase of
temperatures in the planets atmosphere that causes problems which
can affect many of the wildlife in ecosystems around the world. Not only can this
endanger multiple species, this can eventually lead up to catastrophic
events for the human population as well.
Global warming has increased by over 1 degree Fahrenheit
over the last century, and has been increasing rapidly
since the 1980's. Although this statistic may not seem
important, it is a rapid change for the planet and it is
increasing more rapidly now than ever.
Global warming happens due to greenhouse gases created when people burn
fossil fuels. Theres also many other factors but thats usually
the first one that comes to mind. Theres also things like certain
industries that are big factors in global warming.
One of the biggest contributers to climate change,
is the fashion industry. Said industry is responsible for
about 8-10% of global emissions, mostly because of their use of
raw materials. The cotton they use is about 2.5% of the worlds
farmland, things such as polyester require about about 342 million
barrels of oil per year, and the process of producing the clothes
require 43 million tons of chemicals per year. A survey by
environmental charity Hubbub found that more than two-fifths of 16
to 24-year-olds buy clothes online at least once a week, compared
to 13% on average for other age groups. Reducing the fashion industries
carbon footprint would be a big step to limiting global warming, and
the way for us to do that is by only buying clothes when/if we need
them. Its up to us, the buyers, to tell them what we do and don't want.
We want longer lasting clothes, and we want them to stop making more
and more unneeded and unworn clothes.
With the domino effect thats started it seems impossible
to stop but if your informed properly, we could atleast try
our best. The planet getting hotter has caused things like
the polar ice caps melting, this ice was actually one
of the main things helping though! The white of the ice
helped to reflect the suns rays back at the sun. Since we
made it hotter on Earth though, the ocean has gotten hotter,
causing the ice to melt. Not to mention that the sun is also
melting the ice. There being less ice, means theres more
ocean, the blue of the ocean though is dark and darker
colors absorb light instead of reflecting it. This means
that the sun is having an easier time warming up the water
since theres more darker colors than there used to be.
The image on the left is the temperatures on Earth back in 1884. The colors are mostly blue but as you go through the years, more and more yellow spots start showing up. After theres more yellow red starts showing up too, dark blue being the coldest, and red being the hottest. Many people say the industrial revolution is what "started" climate change, as after the industrial revolution, the amount of polloution would grow at a faster and faster rate.
In 2022, the image to the right is the temperatures on the Earth. One of the hottest years on record was 2016, which the year 2020 actually tied with, both being the hottest years we've had to date. Some of the hottest spots seem to actually be up north! Obviously everyone knows that it should be cold up there, the reason its in the red though is because its hotter now than its average.
